Gaining Independence

The little one has been showing signs of independence of late. The most significant one being self feeding. A month ago, I asked the teacher if they reinforced the self feeding I had taught her at school. To my surprise, the teacher replied me that Isabelle had been feeding herself since the 2nd week of school. How could that possibly be?

Two Fridays ago...I decided to test the little one at dinner. To date, I have been feeding her at dinner, mainly to avoid all that mess since it's hard to manage cleaning and looking after her on my own. Self feeding is also much limited to less messy food like fruits & vegetables. So to my surprise, she did pretty well. Tonight, I tested her again...and I have to say I'm really impressed at her new independence. Though there is still some mess, but I would say it is relatively controlled. Much thanks also to the Calibowl. It's probably the best invention ever. The edges are well curved which makes scooping up food very smooth & manageable even for a toddler who may not have very good coordination & control yet.

And here's why I am so thrilled about Isabelle self feeding
(1) I can finally stop mumbling the same few words.."Isabelle, eat", "Isabelle, open your mouth". "Isabelle, see there is chicken, fish..etc". It's tiring repeating the same words honestly to a toddler who just stares back blankly at you. Instead my energy is now diverted to spotting rice grains and whatever else that has dropped on the floor.

(2) Isabelle finishes up all her food without me nagging, though in the oddest fashion...i.e dish first then plain rice later. On contrary, if I had fed her...she will usually eat the dish, refuse the rice....or, pick and select her favourites from the dish (ie. only vegetable and tofu, and not the meat or fish). But I still cant understand why she would eat them if left on her own...so maybe this is a note to myself to stop fussing her

(3) I can finally do the dishes and some household chores while she feeds herself. Every minute counts when I'm on my own...so I really appreciate her new found independence

The second sign of independence? Isabelle expresses what she wants to wear out and even to bed. If the clothes are not to her desire, she will kick a fuss and protest. She knows which are her home clothes vs. her going out clothes, her old PJs vs. the new ones or character ones. She wants to put on lotion on her hands & feet, hair oil on her head, slings my handbag and even put on my heels!!!

And finally the third sign....she poops in the toilet!!! Hurray! She expresses clearly her desire to poop and is able to hold till we reach the toilet. She is still a little confused on the poop vs. the pee, so we're not totally there yet on the fully toilet training bit....but I'm hoping it can be soon. There was a period she was so thrilled about going to the toilet...that she woke up at 3am saying she wanted to poop...and it turned out to be pee. But still we continued to encourage her since it is good practice...so crossing my fingers she can be toilet trained soon to save us some money...whahahaha!

Time flies....my little one is growing up so so fast. A reminder to myself to appreciate every minute with her. As a good friend said to me....the days are long, but the years are few. Treasure our little ones while they are still with us, and harp less on the tiredness we feel. For one day, they will leave us and we will not have the chance to mother them the same way again.
