The Start of Self Feeding

16 jul - Isabelle is 15 months and 5 days old today, and she achieved a major milestone. It shocked me a bit. It was lunchtime, Isabelle wanted to play with her spoon. She did the "spooning" action and followed by the sounds "mumm mumm", except this time it was followed by her bringing the spoon to her mouth. Oh Gosh...I think my heart must have skipped a beat when I saw that.

Unsure whether to believe what I saw... I quickly took out an extra bowl and spooned some pasta into her spoon. She quickly brought the spoon to her mouth. WOW...! I repeated this a few times, and all times she eagerly brought the spoon to her mouth, 90% of the time doing it so accurately with no food dropping onto the table.

Words can't explain the joy I felt. Isabelle must have thought her mummy went a bit mad. Cos I was shouting out "Great job Isabelle!", "My clever baby!", "You're so smart!", "I love you my baby!" and kissing her non stop after every mouth she took. I still can't quite believe it. I had heard from friends about teaching self-feeding, but I'm also very hesitant about the mess. I do guide her holding the spoon to the mouth on the rare occassions that we feed her ourselves, but I do not force her. But I believe, Isabelle must have been observing us at mealtimes, and learned how to feed herself

However way she learnt it, I'm just so proud of my baby. She surprises me day after day by her milestones, and reminds me that there is no need to push, Isabelle can and will learn in her own time and pace, as long as we show her the right way!
